The Entomological Society of Southern Africa's conference was held in Grahamstown in July this year. It is quite evident from the photos - we had a lot of fun!

Ant research

Fieldwork in Jonkershoek, Helderberg Nature Reservce, Elim and other places where ants are plentiful. Digging up ants is quite a workout! After collecting ant colonies in the field, they are brought back to the laboratory for experiments.

Beekeeping

Life's a buzz when you go beekeeping. These are photos taken in the field while inspecting honey bee colonies that are part of a few different research projects. Brood samples are also taken back to the laboratory to isolate bacteria.

Vertebrate projects

Although we mostly work with social insects, some of our research projects are related to larger organisms too: Sharks, lions, elephants, starlings... just to name a few.
